22 Ago Your Old Brick Phone Becomes a Surprisingly Brilliant Retro Video Game Character
Amid the wave of classic game remakes built in Unreal Engine 5 these days, it’s refreshing to see a reminder that quirky, innovative gameplay and a clever premise can still outshine photorealism in game design — and a bit of nostalgia never hurts either.

With a wonderfully utilitarian title, Flipping is Hard is a platformer where you flip an old-school brick phone through hazardous environments like snow, rocks, and rooftops. A phone might not sound like the most charismatic game character, but this game looks surprisingly charming.

Flipping is Hard was developed in Unity by Elegant Horse Studios. With simple controls and physics-based gameplay, players move solely by rotating the phone. On Reddit, the developer shared that the original mechanics were built around a board. But purely by accident, they dropped an old phone while working on the character — and inspiration struck.

“I gave it a try, and somehow, it just clicked,” they wrote. “It felt funnier, more ridiculous, and honestly had way more personality and weird ideas I could run with. So we scrapped the board, and the phone stayed.” And honestly, that was absolutely the right call. A retro phone not only has more personality than a board, it adds a new nostalgic layer to a game already steeped in retro platforming vibes. It also gives players a more relatable goal — saving a phone just hits closer to home than saving a wooden plank.

The game features seven worlds and a charming hand-drawn cartoon art style. Players can customize their phone by unlocking new looks. For an extra nostalgic punch, there are several classic mobile mini-games like Snake, Flappy Bird, and Bounce, plus cameos from other vintage tech devices like a floppy disk and a Tamagotchi, all acting as NPCs.

All that’s missing now is a rice bowl challenge and some vibrating mechanics to complete the full Y2K mobile experience. Elegant Horse warns that most players quit because “they can’t stay calm,” so prepare for a bit of frustration — this one’s a little tricky. Flipping is Hard is slated for release in 2026.
