13 Sep The Karate Kid to Get a New Retro Video Game
GameMill Entertainment and Odaclick Game Studio have announced *The Karate Kid: Street Rumble*, a new game that takes players through the original Karate Kid movies in the style of an 80s side-scrolling beat-‘em-up.
The game focuses on the Karate Kid franchise, specifically on the antagonist Johnny Lawrence as an adult following the events of the original trilogy. With Cobra Kai entering its sixth and final season, the game will celebrate the 40th anniversary of *The Karate Kid*.
The Karate Kid trilogy has only a couple of video games to its name, including a game based on the second film and a Karate Kid game for NES developed by Atlus and published by LJN. In 2021 and 2022, GameMill Entertainment released a duology of *Cobra Kai* video games, both side-scrolling beat-‘em-ups loosely adapting each season of the show, allowing players to fight as any of the Miyagi-Do, Eagle Fang, or Cobra Kai dojos. GameMill Entertainment is now releasing a new game based on this franchise that harks back to the 1980s.

The first trailer for *Street Rumble* was posted on IGN’s YouTube channel, revealing that the game will be a 16-bit style side-scrolling multiplayer beat-‘em-up. Unlike the previously mentioned *Cobra Kai* games, *The Karate Kid: Street Rumble* uses pixel art and 2D sprites instead of 3D models. The game appears to be a parody of other retro-style beat-‘em-ups such as *TMNT: Shredder’s Revenge* or *River City Girls*. *The Karate Kid: Street Rumble* will be released on 20th September 2024 for PC, PlayStation, Xbox, and Nintendo Switch.
As the game is set in the 1980s Karate Kid films, fans can control a young Daniel LaRusso as he faces off against the original film’s antagonists, including Johnny Lawrence, John Kreese, and Terry Silver. Players will also be able to choose from various co-op partners, including Mr. Miyagi, Ali Mills, and Kumiko. The game supports local co-op mode for up to four players.

The game features 12 different stages inspired by the original Karate Kid trilogy, including West Valley High, the Cobra Kai dojo, and more. To complement its intentionally retro look, it has a chiptune-style soundtrack and 16-bit graphics. Many fans of *Cobra Kai* and the original films were impressed with the trailer, as it presents a stylistic throwback akin to *TMNT: Shredder’s Revenge*, but applied to the Karate Kid IP.
