‘GTA VI’: News from Rockstar’s new video game

‘GTA VI’ is in its final stages of development. And although Rockstar has not given more details about very specific dates, status of the project and other issues, the hype is in the air.

The game will arrive for PS5 and Xbox in the fall of 2025. In the first trailer Rockstar only talked about 2025, but in its results report for the fiscal year that ended in 2024, it focused more on the shot. By the way, there are already rumors (which come from a source that anticipated the date of the trailer, among other successes) that speak of a possible delay, although Take-Two has been quick to deny them. Obbe Vermeij, a former developer at Rockstar Games, has also opened that possibility. Based on his experience, he has said that Rockstar itself will not be clear about the possibility of a delay until there are four months left for the launch, and until then it will not get involved with a specific date.

We knew something before the announcement: Rockstar claimed that it had been developing the game since before April 2020. If we have to make a comparison, ‘GTA V’ began development in 2008 and was released in 2013, which gave ‘GTA VI’ a tentative date of 2025. Rockstar seemed to pseudo-confirm this by talking about releases that will set “new standards in our industry” for fiscal year 2025, that is, starting in 2024.

Another detail provided by Rockstar that made us think that we wouldn’t have to wait five years for development is that the company has already announced that the game will have a “smaller” size and that it will grow over time, which suggests that development will not be as complex as previous installments. At the moment, Rockstar workers have already been asked to stop working remotely and face the last months of development.

We can say with almost complete certainty (although nothing is official) that we will see ‘GTA VI’ on Playstation 5, Xbox Series X / S, as stated in the first trailer and, also with certainty, but possibly some time after the initial launch, as is usual for Rockstar, on PC. In this regard, Take Two CEO Strauss Zelnick stated that “the lack of announcements is not something that is written in stone.” That is, we should not take the absence of announcements as a sign of anything.

It is doubtful that the studio will waste time bringing the game to PS4 and Xbox One, although the history of the franchise and its multiplicity of formats allows for certain doubts. By the way, the low stocks of Sony and Microsoft consoles were what made certain analysts think that 2024 was still early for the launch, and they were right.
