Anbernic RG557: All the Details of the New Handheld Retro Gaming Console

Anbernic has finally revealed everything about its first handheld gaming console of 2025. The Anbernic RG557 builds on the RG556, offering faster performance, improved joysticks, and fast wired charging support, among other upgrades. Anbernic has confirmed that the RG557 will also be available for U.S. residents.

Earlier this week, Retro Game Corps reported that Anbernic had informed them of the launch date and pricing for its first retro handheld of the year.

The Anbernic RG557 will be available for pre-order starting April 25 at 03:00 PDT (10:00 UTC). As expected, Anbernic set the base price at $234.99 when shipping from their warehouses in China or the U.S. Alternatively, the handheld will be available in transparent purple or white with a 256 GB MicroSD card for $264.99. Note that Anbernic will increase prices by $15 on April 28, bringing the prices to $249.99 and $279.99, respectively.

To put it in context, the RG557 replaces the RG556 (currently $229.99 on Amazon) and features a 5.48-inch 1080p AMOLED display, powered by a MediaTek Dimensity 8300 chipset and 12 GB of LPDDR5X RAM. Additionally, Anbernic includes 256 GB of UFS 4.0 flash storage with Android 14, and a 5500 mAh battery with 27W fast charging. While the RG557 should be powerful enough to emulate Wii U games, Wi-Fi 6E connectivity also makes it compatible with game streaming services like Nvidia GeForce Now.
