The First Apple Store Turns 24

It has been 24 years since Apple opened its first physical store, marking the beginning of what would become a global retail presence.

On May 19, 2001, Apple launched its very first store at the Tysons Corner Mall in Virginia. At the time, the company didn’t have a strong market presence, and Steve Jobs believed that creating a dedicated retail space would help connect with customers and showcase Apple’s products in exactly the way he envisioned.

To bring this concept to life, Jobs enlisted Ron Johnson, a retail executive from Target. Together, they designed a new kind of store—clean, modern, and organized. It was also the birthplace of the now-iconic Genius Bar, Apple’s in-store support and repair service.

Today, Apple Stores are recognized around the world. There are currently 534 official Apple Stores across 27 countries, with more openings planned in the future.

Looking back, it’s remarkable to see how far Apple’s retail vision has come since that first location opened nearly a quarter-century ago.
