The Elder Scrolls IV Returns with Oblivion Remastered After 20 Years

Bethesda’s official website accidentally leaked the existence of the game. Despite that, the announcement of The Elder Scrolls IV: Remastered got everyone out of their seats once the publisher confirmed it.

In collaboration with Virtuos and under Microsoft’s umbrella, Bethesda commemorated nearly 20 years of history (the original game launched in 2006) of what they call one of their most iconic titles. And it’s available today!

As had been speculated, it’s a shadow drop, meaning it will be playable today on Game Pass, Xbox Series X|S, PC, and PS5. Accompanied by its always powerful soundtrack, they offered a glimpse into the new world of Oblivion.

Undoubtedly, this remaster is the highest graphical expression we’ve ever seen of Morrowind, which makes sense considering that the latest titles in the saga (aside from modern console versions) are at least 10 years old.

The most significant changes in The Elder Scrolls IV: Remastered showcased during Bethesda’s presentation were —above all— technical.

You can see the limitations not only of a remaster but of a game built upon the original’s basic foundation. Yes, it looks better, but it’s not a full leap to the new generation, neither mechanically nor visually.

Still, the difference compared to the original version is evident. The upgrade is extensive in all aspects, and the nearly 20 years of technical evolution are obvious at first glance.

Some aspects could have been improved a bit more—it’s true that some elements feel more PS4 than current-gen.

Combat, the interface, minigames (especially lockpicking, where you’ll need to lift each pin individually), overall balance, and quality of life have all been improved.
