Technological Innovations That Transform Lives

In a pivotal year for artificial intelligence like 2024, major companies are striving more than ever to meet the current demands of consumers seeking practical and functional products and services.

This is because life for a large majority of people is fast-paced, and 24 hours a day are often insufficient to fulfill all responsibilities. As a result of this trend, there is an increasing urgency for tools that make our days easier.

Below, we highlight some technological innovations that could change your life or improve its quality. Many have recently entered the market, while others will emerge in the coming years.

Artificial intelligence can benefit us not only in the workplace by making us more productive but also at home. One company looking to maximize AI is Apple, which launched Apple Intelligence on October 28. This is the first set of features for iPhone, iPad, and Mac users, available through a free software update for iOS 18.1, iPadOS 18.1, and macOS Sequoia 15.1.

According to a press release published on October 28 by Apple, it is a personal intelligence system that provides experiences and tools aimed at enhancing what users can achieve with their devices.

Among other things, it offers writing functionalities that rewrite, correct (with explanations for the edits), and summarize texts from any application, including Mail, Messages, Notes, Pages, and/or third-party apps. It also adjusts the tone to professional, concise, or friendly, depending on the type of text and audience.

Additionally, in the Notes and Phone apps, users can record, transcribe, and summarize audio. When a recording is started during a call in the Phone app, participants receive an automatic notification, and once the call ends, Apple Intelligence generates a summary to help recall key points.

Other brands joining the smart market include Samsung and LG with their environmentally friendly smart washing machines, which combine artificial intelligence and advanced connectivity. Launched in September this year, Samsung’s Bespoke AI Laundry Combo is both a washer and dryer, saving up to 40% of home space.

On the other hand, the AI Wash & Dry system uses advanced sensors to identify the type of fabric and the level of dirt in each load. This way, it can automatically adjust water, detergent, and washing time.

Other features of this washer include Heat Pump drying technology, which reduces energy consumption by up to 70% and prevents delicate garments from shrinking, and the SmartThings app, which allows users to monitor and manage the washer’s energy consumption in real time and adjust wash settings remotely.

As for the LG WashTower Mini, its main feature is that it recirculates air instead of constantly heating it, thereby significantly reducing energy consumption. It includes AI Direct Drive (AI DD) technology, which customizes drum movements based on fabric type, and the ThinQ app, from which users can control the appliance remotely and download up to 20 additional wash and dry cycles.

The major revelation of 2024, however, has been Tesla’s humanoid robot Optimus. Its first prototype was released in 2022, but on October 10, CEO Elon Musk unveiled a model with significant functional improvements driven by artificial intelligence systems. This model could be available to the external market by late 2025, priced between $20,000 and $30,000.

This household assistant will perform everyday tasks such as picking up packages from the front door, watering plants, walking the dog, babysitting, cooking, mowing the lawn, and serving drinks, among other duties. “It can do whatever you tell it to, anything you can think of, it will do. It’s going to be amazing,” Musk commented during the Optimus launch.

What’s most fascinating is that it won’t be overly robotic. Optimus will have fluid movements, be able to recognize changing environments, possess an advanced balance system for walking on uneven surfaces, and interact with people using a human-like accent, incorporating verbal pauses and even slang.

These robots, which Musk claims will boost the global economy and could end poverty by improving labor productivity, will initially perform basic tasks like cleaning, security, and household assistance, with the aim of eventually being integrated into more complex fields such as medical care or education.
